SEARCHA school system in South Carolina changes its bus policy to prevent drivers from leaving keys on buses after the student steals a spare bus when he breaks free from his escort. The student and a person in the house are injured in the collision.
ALLENDALE, S.C. — The local school system changed its bus policy after a 19-year-old student with special needs stole a bus and crashed it into a house on Thursday, WRDW-TV News 12 reports.
Drivers regularly left a key in the spare bus for easy access, Superintendent Harold McClain said. The student reportedly broke free of his adult escort because he was upset that he couldn’t stay after school to watch his friends play sports. He ran to the empty bus and found a key.
The student drove the bus four miles before crashing into a woman’s home. The student and a person inside the home sustained minor injuries.
