SUMMIT, Ill. — Prosecutors said that a school bus driver here was recently accused of driving drunk when she tried to pick special-needs students up from school, Daily Southtown reports.

According to prosecutors, a special-needs assistant allegedly noticed that bus driver Karen Kawa was acting unusual when she drove up to the school at about 3 p.m. on Dec. 20, the newspaper reports. Elementary school students had boarded the bus by the time the assistant alerted the principal and brought him to the bus.

Officials said that Kawa allegedly had trouble standing and appeared sluggish when the principal asked her to step out of the bus. Prosecutors added that the principal took the keys out of the ignition and got the students off the bus, and that police were called to the scene.

Blood alcohol test results allegedly showed that Kawa had a level of 0.231, prosecutors said. Court records show that Kawa was charged with one count of aggravated DUI while operating a bus, according to Daily Southtown.
