HELENA, Ala. — School bus drivers here are teaming up to participate in an annual food drive challenge to combat hunger, according to The Shelby County Reporter.

Drivers from Helena Elementary School and Helena Intermediate School will participate in the second annual bus driver challenge from Nov. 26 through Dec. 3, the news source reports. The goal behind the challenge is for students from both schools to bring in as many canned goods and non-perishable items on the bus they ride to school, according to The Shelby County Reporter. Boxes will be set up on each bus for students to donate food items that will then be given to the community and local food pantries, the news source reports.

Each donated food item will count as one point for the driver of the bus, and once the weeklong challenge is complete, the winning students and driver will be recognized by the schools, according to The Shelby County Reporter.

During last year’s inaugural challenge, the two schools collected 5,423 cans for families in the community, including items such as soups, beans, ramen, and rice, the news source reports.
