AUTAUGAVILLE, Ala. — On Tuesday, 150 school bus drivers here enrolled in a program that officials say provides potentially life-saving information to first responders in the event of a crash.

The Autauga County School System drivers signed up for the free Yellow Dot program as part of a back-to-school event at the Autauga County Extension Office.

The drivers had their photos taken and completed a personal form with emergency contact and medical information. The information is placed in the glove box in their school buses, and a Yellow Dot decal is placed inside the bus near the driver side window to indicate participation in the program.

Until now, Alabama’s Yellow Dot program has focused on getting emergency information in personal vehicles. Officials said that the participation of the school bus drivers marks the first time the program has been implemented in work vehicles in the state.

Yellow Dot officials said they hope that the bus drivers’ involvement will encourage Autauga County teachers and parents and other school systems to participate in the program.

Yellow Dot, which has also been implemented in other states, has steadily expanded in Alabama since it was launched in the state in 2009. The program is now available in 66 of Alabama’s 67 counties and is expected to be implemented in all counties this fall. A grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs supports the program.
