MONTGOMERY, N.J. — A school bus driver here who got lost on his route transporting kindergartners at the end of the first day of school was dismissed, Bridgewater Courier News reports.
The newspaper reports that Annette Wells, the business administrator for the Montgomery Township School District, said at a board meeting on Sept. 11 that the driver, who was employed by school bus contractor Irvin Raphael Inc., made “some wrong turns” on the afternoon of Sept. 6 while taking students home. She added that the driver was let go after he did not follow the school district’s protocol for conducting a practice run on the route before the first day of school.
One parent, Jennifer Lafaman, told the school board at the meeting that when her son’s bus did not arrive more than an hour after it was due, she got into her car and followed the bus route. Lafaman said she eventually found it “nowhere near the bus route” at about 6:15 p.m., according to Bridgewater Courier News. Lafaman added that she retrieved her son and a neighbor’s child from the bus “dripping in sweat” because the bus wasn’t air-conditioned.
Richard Cavalli, the president of the school board, said that the district needs to review its busing policy and procedures, the newspaper reports. Cavalli added in the meeting that introducing an app that would allow parents to track school buses could potentially present security problems.
