7-Year-Old Killed Waiting for School Bus

A boy was killed while standing near a school bus stop in Bethesda, Maryland. The incident happened on April 6. Montgomery County Police report that 7-year-old Muhammad Haekal Saifullah Elsyaf was waiting to be picked up by his school bus with his father and 18-month-old brother when an elderly driver left the roadway for an unknown reason, striking the family. After the crash, the driver re-entered the roadway, traveled across both lanes of traffic, then left the road again. The child's father sustained minor injuries and the infant was uninjured. Police confirmed to NBC 4 Washington that the driver did not suffer a medical episode. Detectives are investigating the accident, and have not determined whether charges will be filed against the driver.

Student Struck by Motorcycle While Exiting School Bus

An elementary school student in Edina (Minn.) was struck by a motorcyclist just after getting off a school bus on April 11. Edina Police reported that the bus had its stop arm extended with flashing lights operating. The motorcyclist traveling in the same direction reportedly passed the stopped bus by entering the lanes of oncoming traffic, hitting the boy. Police reported the child was taken to the hospital with significant but non-life-threatening injuries. The motorcycle driver was arrested.

Students Charged In Assault on School Bus

Three high school students were arrested for an alleged assault that happened on a Jones County (Miss.) school bus. Jones County School District Superintendent Tommy Parker told WDAM that the incident happened on April 6. The students were charged with assault and will face further disciplinary actions at school. The students reportedly ranged from ages 14 through 17, and the victim was reported to be in 7th grade. WDAM reported that a separate minor incident happened on the same bus with the same students two day prior, but was unreported at the time.

Man Arrested Following School Bus Altercation

A man was arrested on April 7 after the Nye County (Nev.) Sheriff's Office reported he refused to exit a school bus. Video provided by the Nye County transportation department showed 34-year-old Derrick Fisher getting onto the steps and the driver telling him not to enter. Fisher refused, got partially inside the bus, and threatened the driver. Deputies contacted Fisher, who reportedly confessed to entering the bus so that it wouldn't leave. He was arrested and charged with intimidating a public official and false imprisonment.
