LARGO, Md. — A school bus aide here has been charged with assaulting a 7-year-old student with special needs, NBC 4 reports.

On June 7, on a school bus headed to the Foundation School, according to charging documents, DeQuan Brooks sat next to the student and began playing music on his phone, which led to the student acting out, according to the news source.

Gina Ford, a spokesperson for Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, told NBC 4 that the student wanted to move to a different seat but wasn’t allowed to, and allegedly took Brooks’ phone and tried to throw it out a window. Brooks then allegedly grabbed the boy, threw him around the bus and over a seat, and began trying to choke him. Police told a parent of the boy, who had bruises on his neck, that he should be taken to see a doctor, according to the news source.

Prince George's County Police told NBC 4 that they reviewed surveillance video and didn’t find evidence to support the allegation of the student trying to throw the aide’s phone out the window. Brooks was charged with child abuse and second-degree assault. A spokesman for Prince George’s County Public Schools told the news source that Brooks and the two other adults aboard the bus at the time of the incident have been reassigned to positions that don't involve contact with students.
