HOLLIS, N.H. — A motorist here was arrested on Friday for allegedly passing a stopped school bus while intoxicated, police said.

The Hollis Police Department received numerous 911 calls from motorists about a vehicle that illegally passed a school bus while it was unloading students, according to a news release from the department. Responding officers also learned that there had been an altercation between the motorist who allegedly committed the violation and other people in the immediate area. When Lt. Brendan LaFlamme located and attempted to stop the vehicle, the motorist tried to elude the stop by quickly turning into a long, common driveway.

Police said that the stop and a subsequent investigation determined that Joseph Demaio, 21, was impaired, and he was placed under arrest. Demaio was charged with operating under the influence of intoxicating liquor, disobeying a police officer, possessing an open container, and unlawfully passing a school bus, according to the Hollis Police Department.

Demaio was released on $2,000 personal recognizance bail with an arraignment date of Sept. 12.

Witnesses of the incident are asked to contact the police department, because the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
