HOLCOMB, Kan. — A school district here plans to install security cameras that will record video and audio inside its school buses, and track the buses’ location and speed, Garden City Telegram reports.

The school board for Holcomb Unified School District 363 recently approved a bid for a security camera system from Kansas Truck Equipment Co., according to the newspaper. Four cameras located inside each bus will feature an infrared setting and will be able to record day or night. Some of the cameras will be equipped with a GPS receiver to track the location and speed of the bus.

Jean Rush, the district’s superintendent, told Garden City Telegram the plan to install the cameras was not spurred by any particular event on the school buses; the cameras are intended to add more safety and accountability for the district. Rush could not give a specific date for when the system will be installed, according to the newspaper.

School board President Matt Jones told Garden City Telegram the cameras are part of a larger security plan that began over one year ago, and the district plans to install more security cameras in school buildings and parking lots. The district is also considering remodeling school entrances for extra security, the newspaper reports.
