BRADENTON, Fla. — The School District of Manatee County will become the first in the country to receive hybrid school buses through a nationwide program initiated by Advanced Energy.
District officials will be presented with two of the buses, which were manufactured by IC Corporation and Enova Systems, in a ceremony tomorrow.
“We are proud to be pioneers in this exciting new area of transportation technology, which will help us field a more efficient bus fleet that produces less harmful emissions,” said Manatee Superintendent Roger Dearing.
The two hybrids are among a total of 19 that were awarded by Advanced Energy to school districts, contractors and departments of education in 11 states.
Officials involved with the project expect the hybrids to improve fuel economy by 70 to 100 percent — up from an earlier estimate of 40 percent — and reduce emissions by up to 90 percent.
