ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Bus driver Peter Schuhl shares in a letter to the editor of the St. Augustine Record his experience on his route for St. Joseph Academy Catholic High School on Sept. 11, 2001.
Schuhl recounts how, when picking up the 22 high school students after school that afternoon, he learned that classes had been canceled, and they had spent the day watching news coverage of the attack on TV. The students sat quietly on the bus for a few minutes, then began singing “God Bless America,” “America The Beautiful” and the national anthem. Two foreign exchange students on the bus joined in, which Schuhl says was inspiring to the American students.
The driver adds that he is “certain they all remember the singing, including the foreign classmates wherever they may be in the world today.”
