SAN FRANCISCO — Durham School Services will post signs on its California school buses stating that they emit diesel fumes that pollute the air.
The contractor also plans to notify students and their families that exposure to the exhaust emitted by its buses can cause cancer, especially in young children.
Environmental groups sued Durham in January for allegedly violating California law by exposing children to diesel exhaust without a warning.
In addition to the sign-posting and notifications, Durham has agreed to begin replacing its diesel-powered buses statewide with ones that are more environmentally friendly. The company expects to have the phase-in completed by 2014.
