Boy with autism left on school bus after falling asleep
The bus driver did not find the 8-year-old, who was being taken to a summer camp program, until he got back to his base when he checked the bus. The bus company said the driver followed protocol and it is considering more prevention measures.
RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Parents said their 8-year-old son, who has autism, was left behind on a school bus after falling asleep, WJAC-TV reports.
Sandra Kennedy told the news source that she got a call one recent morning from the summer camp that her son, Jonathan, was attending, telling her that he had not arrived because he fell asleep on the bus and wasn’t found until the driver got back to his base.
The bus company, Tri County Transportation, told WJAC-TV that the driver followed proper protocol and checked the bus when he returned to his base. The company acknowledged that the final bus check took a little longer than a usual school run because the coverage area is different and transportation to the camp is a special service for the summer, according to the news source.
Tri County Transportation released a statement that said that as soon as the boy was discovered, the camp was notified and he was returned safely to the camp complex. The statement also said the driver was placed on suspension until investigations into the incident have been completed, and further prevention measures are being considered, according to WJAC-TV.
