Pupil transportation officials at operations in Tennessee, Colorado, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire have completed the National Association for Pupil Transportation’s (NAPT) Special Needs Transportation (SNT) Training Program.  

Gena Murchison, a special-education route specialist at Jackson-Madison County School System in Jackson, Tenn., attended and completed the SNT courses at the NAPT Summit and the National Conference and Exhibition on Transporting Students with Disabilities & Preschoolers.

Karen Knight, a safety and training manager at Adams 12 Five Star Schools in Thornton, Colo., attended and completed the SNT courses at the NAPT Summit and at Colorado State Pupil Transportation Association events.

In Pennsylvania, Uldis Vilcins, who is a supervisor of transportation at Montgomery County Intermediate Unit in Norristown, completed the special-needs courses at the 2012 National Conference and Exhibition on Transporting Students with Disabilities & Preschoolers.

Sandy Rowe also completed the courses at the conference. Rowe is an area safety and compliance supervisor at Student Transportation of America in Goffstown, N.H.  

The NAPT SNT Training Program provides opportunities for transportation personnel serving students with disabilities to access educational opportunities at both local and national conferences and to gain national recognition for their efforts.  

The program has a core curriculum that consists of six special-needs courses in a variety of settings, including a school bus roadeo and a trade show of school transportation products and services.

The core curriculum is supplemented by two courses of elective instruction from the NAPT Professional Development Series Program.

The syllabus for the core curriculum has been specifically designed to increase an individual’s specific knowledge about transporting students with disabilities, officials said.
