LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two children were in critical condition and a third child was in serious condition on Thursday morning after a car struck them while trying to pass their school bus, WHAS11 reports.
Police told the news source that at approximately 8 a.m., a Cadillac Escalade hit the children, who were on the sidewalk, trapping at least one girl under the car. Several area residents tried to lift the car off the girl, according to WHAS11. The children were rushed to the hospital. The driver of the car was also taken to the hospital and was in serious condition, the news source reports.
The two children who were critically injured are siblings, ages 9 and 10, according to WHAS11.
Police concluded that the driver of the SUV did not realize that the Jefferson County Public Schools bus had stopped, according to the news source. In an attempt to avoid hitting the bus, the driver swerved to the right side of the bus and did not see the three children on the sidewalk. Police said that the bus did have its warning lights activated and was stopping to pick up children at the bus stop, WHAS11 reports.
