Bill would require formal rulemaking on sleep apnea

The federal legislation would force FMCSA to go through a formal notice and comment rulemaking proceeding when issuing guidance on the screening and testing of commercial motor vehicle drivers for obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. NSTA is among the transportation organizations advocating for the bill.

Washington state superintendent backs stop-arm cameras

More than 1,500 school bus passing violations were counted in Washington's one-day survey earlier this year. Under state legislation passed in 2011, school districts have the authority to equip buses with stop-arm cameras, and state Superintendent Randy Dorn is urging districts "to look into whether installing the cameras is the right thing for that community.”

District reinstates busing with fee, courtesy service for dangerous routes

Lake County (Fla.) Schools students who lost courtesy bus service because they live within 2 miles of their schools will now be able to pay a $1 or $2 fee to ride the bus. Additionally, the district will restore free bus service for students within the 2-mile zones who have dangerous walking routes that include crossing roadways with high speeds or multiple lanes.
