District combats bus passing with law enforcement, education efforts

Grand Ledge (Mich.) Public Schools’ transportation department has partnered with local police, who cite motorists captured on camera running the buses’ stop arms, and the transportation staff is also working to inform the public of the state’s laws for driving around school buses through billboards and other media outlets. Transportation Supervisor John Legus discusses these and other initiatives with SBF.

Measure to provide funding for contractor rejected

M&M Bus Co. operates 74 school buses for Muncie (Ind.) Community Schools, and members of the community reject a referendum that called for raising property taxes by 22 cents for every $100 of assessed property value for a total of $3.35 million for the contractor. The next step will be to submit a waiver to the state.

Florida authorities make arrest in school bus thefts

Alphonso Bernard Rock, owner of 95 South Tours and Transportation, is taken into custody after deputies discover two school buses that had gone missing from a Georgia district at a football stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. Deputies also discover two school buses that were stolen from a Florida district near an interstate in Gainesville, Fla.

Durham partners with first responders for safety training

More than 30 Bonner Springs, Kan., firefighters and paramedics participated in the school bus contractor’s training program on bus evacuation to better enable them to assist in an emergency on a school bus. The first responders tested their training hands-on as they explored two styles of buses and could see how each emergency exit worked, including the different door options and roof hatches.
