Update: Indiana gov. signs bill on bus funding losses

The bill, signed into law last week, is designed to give flexibility to school districts facing transportation budget reductions. California district pilots electric drive system on bus

Escondido Union High School District is testing the ElecTruck Drive System from TransPower for one month. The system has been retrofitted on a Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX unit, and Director of Transportation Robert Berkstresser says data being tracked during the pilot period include the battery stability, motor efficiency and the reserve percentage of energy after a route.

8-year-old hit by teen driver passing bus

A Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., girl is seriously injured when a 17-year-old driving a pickup truck illegally passes her stopped school bus and strikes her. The girl is taken to the hospital, but a local news source reports that her condition is improving.

Boston district votes to expand transit bus pass program

Boston Public Schools’ school committee approves Interim Superintendent John McDonough’s budget recommendation for the 2015 fiscal year, which included a proposal to expand the district’s mass transit bus pass program to more seventh- and eighth-grade students and eliminate yellow bus service for these students. The move is reportedly met by opposition from some, including the Boston City Council, which believes the proposal requires more evaluation.

The board at Minnesota’s South Washington County Schools approves a plan to adjust bell times from four to three tiers, which will go into effect for the 2014-15 school year. However, the board decides against shortening walking distances to the levels at which they had been up until last school year.

The Ohio Association for Pupil Transportation honors Toledo Public Schools' Brad Aemisegger with the William Rice Award of Excellence, which designates the state's transportation supervisor of the year. Aemisegger got his start in the industry almost 30 years ago as a school bus driver for the Toledo district.

Charles “Chuck” Poland Jr. was a school bus driver. Not just any school bus driver, but the one who put his life on the line to protect his passengers when a deranged and armed man commandeered his bus last year. A little more than a year after he was slain on the job, we should all continue to honor his memory, his dedication to the children entrusted to him, and his exceptional heroism.
