Report: Bus driver acted ‘responsibly’ at railway crossing

A police investigation reveals that during the incident in Milton, Ontario, the bus driver looked and listened for train traffic, then started moving the bus forward. Signals began to alert the arrival of a train, so the driver stopped immediately. A Canadian Pacific Railway employee who witnessed the incident confirmed that the bus was several meters away from the used service tracks and no one was in any danger.

First Student acquires Star Shuttle Co.

The contractor began operating the school and charter transportation service provider’s approximately 70 buses under the Star Shuttle name on Oct. 30. Star Shuttle contracts have been transferred to First Student, and all 140 employees who passed stringent background checks were offered employment with the company.

Transportation rules change for New Jersey students’ resident districts

Under a new law, a student’s district of residence, not his or her choice school district, is responsible for arranging and paying for his or her transportation to and from school. Under a second law, children placed in foster homes remain residents of the school districts in which their parents or legal guardians live.

Parents to sign student bus behavior contracts

Officials at an Ohio school district are combating inappropriate bus behavior by introducing a contract that must be signed by parents in order for their children to ride the bus. The contract will inform parents of undesirable bus conduct, including fighting, yelling, eating and drinking.

Emergency information packet developed for special-needs bus riders

The packet, available to pupil transportation providers in Michigan, includes a Passenger Emergency Information Form template and a Transportation Information/Emergency Sheet template. The first form serves as a roster of all passengers on a bus while the second can be modified to include other important student information.

Deaf student dropped off at vacant house

After school last month, Jayman Washington boarded a bus that he does not normally take and the driver, who did not know that Washington had moved a week before, left him at his old residence where no one was home. The transportation department at the district where the driver works will now review its policies for dropping off students at its safety meetings.
