Boat serves as school bus for N.C. students

Some children who live on a peninsula on Lake Norman have drastically shortened their commute by taking a boat to school. Scott Huseby started by ferrying his three children across the water to SouthLake Christian Academy, and he has since expanded the service to other families at no charge.

Atlantic Express’ Domenic Gatto to retire

The founder and CEO of school bus contractor Atlantic Express Transportation Corp. will step down from his post on Dec. 31, 2013, after more than 40 years in the industry. Officials say a search for Gatto’s replacement is underway, and once the new CEO is in place, Gatto will serve as a consultant for the company.

School bus plunges off overpass in Texas

A 7-year-old boy and two adults were recovering in a hospital from injuries they sustained in Thursday’s accident in San Antonio. Police say the bus fell about 15 feet to the access road below after colliding with a car.

Cook-Illinois to expand use of Zonar telematics platform

The school bus contractor currently uses the platform on 900 buses and plans to use it on 1,300 additional buses by the end of this year. The technology is used to track vehicle mileage, speed, idling and stops, and some routes also utilize Zonar’s electronic vehicle inspection report and ZPass for tracking students.

In an article by Philip Ball for the Energy Quarterly feature of MRS Bulletin, a professor and researcher at Drexel University in Philadelphia explains supercapacitors as power-storage devices that can supply onboard electrical power in vehicles. Officials say that on buses, the technology can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 30%.
