The Missouri Association for Pupil Transportation names Rudy Rhodes of the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District the 2014 School Bus Driver of the Year at its annual conference on Wednesday. Rhodes was nominated by a coworker for his community service activities, including initiation of the Book Buddies program at Prairie View Elementary School.

After petitioning the National Labor Relations Board and getting free legal assistance, the school bus drivers are allowed to hold a secret-ballot election to determine whether to keep Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1729 as their bargaining representative. Nearly 90% of the drivers casting ballots vote to remove the union.
Read More →The Roanoke County School Board approved a market adjustment to part-time driver pay, increasing the hourly rate for drivers by $3.50, and a $150 attendance bonus for drivers. The initiatives were approved as part of an effort to compete with surrounding school systems as well as fill bus driver vacancies after months of controversy over part-time driver benefit cuts.

An initial review ruled out an electrical short as the cause, and although other buses in the same lot were vandalized and damaged earlier last week, it is not clear whether the fire is related to that incident, officials said.
Read More →Troy Edward Daniels, a former Jordan (Utah) School District bus driver, was charged with misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and failure to signal in connection with the death of a student riding his bus, who was struck by another bus as she crossed the street. After Daniels pulled over onto the shoulder to let students off the bus, police said, he allegedly chose not to activate the bus’s red lights and signals or stop sign because he needed to hand out flyers to the students.
