App targets distracted driving by monitoring phone use

Louisiana state law may put more miles on school buses

The law, which was intended to address safety problems in metropolitan areas, prohibits school bus drivers from loading or unloading students at school or near their homes in a way that would cause them to have to cross traffic lanes. School districts statewide are concerned that the law will cause them to double their travel times, increase their budgets and inconvenience parents.

Fire that damaged 4 buses being investigated as suspicious

The Wake County (N.C.) Public School System school buses caught fire last week in a lot at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School. An initial review ruled out an electrical short as the cause, and although other buses in the same lot were vandalized and damaged earlier last week, it is not clear whether the fire is related to that incident, officials said.

Former school bus driver charged in death of student

Troy Edward Daniels, a former Jordan (Utah) School District bus driver, was charged with misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and failure to signal in connection with the death of a student riding his bus, who was struck by another bus as she crossed the street. After Daniels pulled over onto the shoulder to let students off the bus, police said, he allegedly chose not to activate the bus’s red lights and signals or stop sign because he needed to hand out flyers to the students.

STI wins 3 conversion contracts

The contractor will take on publicly operated school district transportation system fleets in Pennsylvania, Vermont and Idaho. The new contracts will add over 290 vehicles and increase current fiscal year revenues by $11 million annually, according to STI.

Bus assistant resigns after being accused of slapping autistic child

Pasco County (Fla.) Schools bus assistant James Lambert was charged with two counts of child abuse after allegedly striking a 10-year-old boy for cursing. The district had planned to start the process of terminating his employment, according to a spokeswoman. Lambert had been reprimanded multiple times in the past; however, in none of those instances was he accused of hitting a child.
