Mom says pre-K daughter can’t ride school bus

A school bus passes Faith Bostic’s house, but only stops for Head Start students. Kanawha County Schools’ transportation director says the county can't afford to offer all of its pre-kindergarten students school bus transportation, but says that the girl can ride the bus as long as there's room and she catches it at an established Head Start stop.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Faith Bostic says that her daughter, Jordan, can’t ride a school bus to her pre-kindergarten class at a local elementary school.

A school bus passes the Bostics’ home, but it only stops for Head Start students, and the Bostics make too much money to qualify for the federally subsidized preschool program, the Charleston Daily Mail reports.

George Beckett, transportation director for Kanawha County Schools, says Bostic’s daughter can ride the bus as long as there's room and she catches it at an already-established Head Start stop. Otherwise, the county can't afford to offer all of its pre-kindergarten students school bus transportation.

Transportation for Head Start students is mostly funded by federal dollars, but the county still ends up paying about $150,000 a year, according to the Charleston Daily Mail.

Bostic told the newspaper that her son was able to ride the bus when he was in pre-kindergarten because a Head Start student lived next door. Therefore, she does not think it would be a problem for the bus to pick up her daughter.

However, Beckett said that he can’t make an exception for just one student because then he would have to make exceptions for others.
