Wyoming lawmakers consider tougher bus-passing penalties

The state Legislature’s Joint Education Committee is reportedly interested in raising the penalties for bus-passing violations and making it a stepped offense so that penalties are increased for multiple offenses. The legislators also are considering installing external cameras on all daily route buses to help in catching and citing offenders.

Campaign aims to curb stop-arm violations in South Carolina

David Poag of Anderson School District Five tells SBF about the goals of the S.A.V.E. (Stop-Arm Violation Education Enforcement) campaign, which include making school bus stops in the state safer and creating awareness among the public and state legislators about the dangers of stop-arm violations. Sen. Thomas Alexander introduces legislation supporting one of the campaign's goals, telling SBF, “It’s hard for me to imagine how someone would pass the arm of a stopped school bus.”

In partnership with the School Bus Safety Co., the Child Safety Network initiative aims to reduce school bus accidents — with an added benefit of generating revenue for districts. The free Safe Bus program, which receives funds from corporate sponsorships, includes a comprehensive training curriculum, school bus safety PSAs, and a GPS and parental notification system.

47-year school bus driver honored in New York

Pat Beesmer, a driver for Ethan Allen Transportation, is named School Bus Driver of the Year in Ulster County. A mother of three kids who have been passengers on Beesmer's bus says that she is "very tuned in to every child's needs — those who occasionally get bus sick, and those who miss Mom or Dad on their first day of school."

Bill aimed at protecting students on private roads approved

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signs into law House Bill 2170, which amends the current law to state that school bus drivers must engage their bus’ stop arm and flashing lights while students are boarding or disembarking on a private road or driveway. Officials say the bill will take effect 90 days after the current legislative session ends.

Driver who hit boy while passing bus avoids jail

A judge in Pennsylvania declines a prosecutor's suggestion that jail time "might be appropriate," sentencing the 62-year-old woman instead to community service and probation. The 5-year-old boy's skull was fractured when he was clipped by the woman's car as she illegally passed his bus.
