Driver, aide start Thanksgiving turkey drive for needy students

Murfreesboro (Tenn.) City Schools bus driver Vegas Cowart and her assistant Ed Arno started a drawing contest to give away turkeys to two students on their route. They got many more entries than expected and help from the transportation department and community, and ended up giving away more than 90 turkeys.

Woman arrested for following school bus

Scarlotte Freeman was allegedly following the bus for no apparent reason just yards away from Henry F. Moss Middle School in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The bus driver immediately notified staff in the bus garage, who contacted school personnel, who worked with the police department. Police charged Freeman with disorderly conduct and harassment and spoke to four children who said Freeman tried to lure them into her vehicle.

Salem-Keizer launches cyclist safety campaign, cuts idling by 60%

Salem-Keizer (Ore.) Public Schools staff members collaborated with a local cyclist, the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Oregon Bike Racing Association on a bicycle-bus safety awareness poster to educate bus drivers. Meanwhile, the fleet, safety and facilities team was able to cut idling by nearly two-thirds last year, and the transportation team reduced accidents by 59%.
