Police say Erik Paulik is transporting four students and two adult monitors when he rear-ends a small minivan carrying students. He is charged with operating under the influence of intoxicating liquor — he reportedly has a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit — child endangerment while operating under the influence and failing to slow when approaching an intersection.

District launches new bus evacuation training effort

The transportation staff at Maine School Administrative District #37 in Harrington incorporates side window emergency exit evacuation into its training following an accident wherein the rear exit of a bus became unusable. Director of Transportation Dawn Coffin tells SBF that the bus drivers learned safe techniques for this type of evacuation, and the district hopes to begin the training with students in the upcoming school year.

No mechanical problems found on bus in crash

Maintenance reports indicate that there are no issues with a Tippecanoe School Corp. bus that was involved in a crash earlier this year. Beverly Turner, a former bus driver for the Indiana district, claimed that steering problems may have caused her to drive the bus into a cement post, but investigators determined that she fell asleep at the wheel.
