Students help younger passengers during bus fire

Four students who attend a middle school within Tulsa Public Schools assist younger students by getting them to the rear emergency exit and out of the bus and keeping them safely away from the bus after smoke began billowing from the engine. Monroe Demonstration School Principal Tom Padalino tells a news outlet that the older students created "a teachable moment, and that's what we're here to do."

Oklahoma district supports Child Abuse Awareness Month

The transportation department at Woodward Public Schools observes the cause in April by decorating its buses with blue ribbons, an international symbol for child abuse prevention. Transportation Director Rosetta Loomis tells a local newspaper that, “It is a wonderful teaching and learning opportunity.”

Online option offered for Oklahoma recertification requirement

School Training Solutions has released an online curriculum to help Oklahoma school bus drivers meet a new recertification requirement that the State Department of Education instituted. Drivers whose certification has expired for more than a year can purchase and take these online courses through the Oklahoma Association for Pupil Transportation.

District catches stop-arm runners with ‘Badges on Buses’

Norman (Okla.) Public Schools partners with a group of police officers for the initiative, in which one officer rides a school bus while other officers follow the bus in unmarked units. The officer on the bus radios the accompanying officers upon spotting a bus-passing violation, and enforcement action is taken.

Blue Bird contributes to Moore tornado recovery

The school bus manufacturer presents a check for $10,000 to the six Moore (Okla.) Public Schools bus drivers who lost their homes during the May 20 tornado. Blue Bird’s Oklahoma dealer, Ross Transportation Inc., contributes $2,500 to Moore tornado victims through the American Red Cross.
