School bus driver charged in fatal Idaho crash

Debra Boatwright is charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in the Kuna, Idaho, crash that killed an 11-year-old school bus passenger in December. The Idaho State Police's investigation found that the bus driver failed to yield the right of way to a dump truck, which struck the rear passenger side of the bus.

Florida school bus driver killed in crash

According to a preliminary police investigation, a Toyota Camry turned and struck a school bus, which veered off the road and into a pole. The bus driver, 65-year-old William Fowler II, did not survive the crash. The Toyota driver has been charged with DUI, authorities say.

Investigators say they believe the bus driver left the bus unattended with four students on board, and the vehicle then crossed the road and struck a small child who was standing on a corner. All five children have been released from the hospital, and the driver has been arrested on multiple charges.

NHTSA: 0.35% of fatal crashes were school transportation related

The latest federal data show that of the 348,253 fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes from 2003 to 2012, 1,222 were classified as related to school transportation. A large majority (71%) of those killed in school transportation-related crashes in that 10-year span were occupants of other vehicles.

NTSB investigating crashes involving tire failure

In one of the crashes, an SUV’s tire tread separated, and the vehicle collided with a school bus carrying a high school baseball team. The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating a crash of a church van in which the tire that failed was part of a product recall.
