California district ends school bus pilot program

In March, Etiwanda School District launched a "shared cost model" pilot transportation program for students who live at least 3 miles from school. District officials say that the program "did not generate the interest nor the revenue that was expected," and the board decides to discontinue it after the last day of school.

District expects activity buses to save $4,000 per trip

Southern California's William S. Hart Union High School District specs the Blue Bird Type D buses to turn them into activity buses, outfitting them with coach-style seating, overhead open storage compartments and ducted air-conditioning systems. Director of Transportation Richard Varner estimates that using these buses will cost around $2,000 per trip on the longest trips, compared to $6,000 for a charter bus.

California Highway Patrol awarded for school bus safety efforts

The law enforcement agency, which annually inspects more than 23,000 school buses in the state and plays a key role in certifying school bus drivers, wins the 2014 California State Child Safety Award. The honor is presented by the Child Safety Network.

STA secures $10 million California contract

The school bus contractor will serve San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools beginning in January under the five and a half year agreement, and it will provide 133 new, ultra-low-emission vehicles and 31 propane autogas vehicles. STA also reports that all major contracts that were part of the acquisition of Atlantic Express’ California assets have been extended.

NTSB issues preliminary report on motorcoach-FedEx truck crash

The FedEx truck, traveling southbound on Interstate 5, drove through the center median and entered the northbound traffic lanes of the interstate, where it collided with a passenger car, which rotated counterclockwise and departed the highway. The FedEx vehicle then hit the motorcoach, both vehicles departed the highway and a post-crash fire ensued.

Bus driver honored for saving 2 kids from floodwaters

Ricardo Ramos, a driver and trainer for Student Transportation of America, is named the Southern California School Bus Driver of the Year by the California Highway Patrol for getting the siblings to safety after they were washed away in the storm water last summer. Ramos humbly accepts the award, saying, “I really didn’t expect any of this. I was just in the right place at the right moment.”

Children of bus driver in California crash speak of mother’s heroism

Jordan and Jordayna Lealao-Taiao say that survivors of the tour bus-FedEx truck crash on April 10 tell them that they might not have survived if it wasn’t for their mother. Jordan adds that the investigation into the collision so far seems to indicate that his mother brought the impact of the crash onto her side of the bus.

10 dead in motorcoach-FedEx truck crash

The bus is traveling on a freeway and carrying high school students on their way to California’s Humboldt State University for a tour when the FedEx semi-truck crosses the freeway’s median and collides with the bus. The drivers of both vehicles, three chaperones and five students are killed. The California Highway Patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident.

U.S. DOT unveils distracted driving campaign

The effort is the Department of Transportation's first-ever national advertising campaign and law enforcement crackdown to combat distracted driving. Ads using the phrase “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” will run from April 7 to 15, which coincides with a nationwide law enforcement crackdown in states with distracted driving bans.

California district pilots electric drive system on bus

Escondido Union High School District is testing the ElecTruck Drive System from TransPower for one month. The system has been retrofitted on a Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX unit, and Director of Transportation Robert Berkstresser says data being tracked during the pilot period include the battery stability, motor efficiency and the reserve percentage of energy after a route.
