Bus driver defends girl from dog attack

Denise Dolcoe, a school bus driver for Fort Bend (Texas) Independent School District, was on her afternoon route when she noticed a pit bull attacking a girl. Officials say that the driver immediately stopped her bus, grabbed a bucket and ran to the girl’s defense.

Texas district cuts fuel costs by 33% with propane buses

Seguin Independent School District has been operating propane-powered school buses for six years, and it currently has 28 buses running on the fuel in its fleet, with plans to purchase more in the future. In addition to the savings in fuel costs, officials say the district has saved $500,000 since 2008 through the initial reimbursement for the purchase of the buses and the rebate on the fuel.

Houston drivers get creative for ‘School Bus Shuffle’ video

In honor of National School Bus Safety Week, Houston Independent School District’s transportation team created the video, which covers such topics as proper boarding procedures, how to sit on the bus and the importance of reporting bullying. Transportation Field Safety Investigator Curtis Harris wrote the song and choreographed its accompanying dance.

Over 2,000 propane school buses now running in Texas

The Propane Council of Texas reports that about 75 Texas school districts are operating buses powered by propane autogas. A 50-cent-per-gallon tax credit for propane has helped districts generate big savings in fuel costs.

Bus driver still at the wheel, serving community at 83

Pecos-Barstow-Toyah Independent School District bus driver John Stickels has served his community for the past 55 years as a school bus driver, coach and Boy Scouts of America troop leader, and he has been named Pecos Educator of the Year twice by the city of Pecos, Texas. He retired from teaching in 1998 and tells SBF this may be the year he retires from driving.

A total of 351 community volunteers from 53 businesses and organizations participate in Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District’s program, which is designed to help new bus riders find their bus stops during the first few days of school. Fine for stop-arm running rises to $1,250 in Texas

The increased maximum fine for a first offense of stop-arm running goes into effect Sept. 1. The director of the Texas Department of Public Safety says that his agency "will not tolerate individuals who disregard the law and illegally pass stopped school buses."

District’s employees can’t be bus drivers and teachers

Dallas County Schools employees who were hired by Dallas Independent School District (DISD) to transport students and who are also teachers for DISD are told they can’t hold both positions under a new district policy. Officials say the policy change comes in part because one of the drivers was recently caught driving while clocked in as a teacher.
