The FedEx truck, traveling southbound on Interstate 5, drove through the center median and entered the northbound traffic lanes of the interstate, where it collided with a passenger car, which rotated counterclockwise and departed the highway. The FedEx vehicle then hit the motorcoach, both vehicles departed the highway and a post-crash fire ensued.

The bus is traveling on a freeway and carrying high school students on their way to California’s Humboldt State University for a tour when the FedEx semi-truck crosses the freeway’s median and collides with the bus. The drivers of both vehicles, three chaperones and five students are killed. The California Highway Patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident.

Deborah Hersman, who has served on the National Transportation Safety Board since 2004, will leave in April to become president and CEO of the National Safety Council. Mike Martin, executive director of the National Association for Pupil Transportation, says that Hersman "has been and will surely continue to be a very effective advocate for continuous improvement in school transportation."

Read More →In response to NTSB recommendations, NASDPTS says it will develop guidelines to assist schools in training bus drivers, students and parents on “the importance and proper use” of various types of school bus seat belts. The state directors association says it will also develop educational materials on “lap and shoulder belts providing the highest level of protection for school bus passengers” — another NTSB recommendation.

He is expected to discuss recent crash investigation results and recommendations. Also during the joint session, attendees will watch the film “Impact: After the Crash,” which reenacts the catastrophic 1988 bus crash in Carrollton, Ky., and shares inspirational stories of survivors.
