Alabama students honored for actions during bus hijacking

Dr. Thomas Bice, Alabama’s superintendent of schools, presents proclamations to each of the students who were on their school bus when it was hijacked by gunman Jimmy Lee Dykes, who allegedly shot driver Charles Poland and then abducted one student. Bice says the students displayed safety skills that Poland taught them, and he recounts how the students loved Poland.

Teacher unknowingly allows sex offender on school bus

On the way back from a field trip, the teacher offers a student's parent and the parent’s male companion a ride on the bus. It's later discovered that the man is a registered sex offender. The California district’s superintendent says the incident is a “breach of our policy.”

Durham wins new Wisconsin, Illinois contracts

Beginning in August, the school bus contractor will serve the School District of Beloit (Wis.) and Red Bud (Ill.) Community School Unit #132. For the first district, Durham will operate routes with 33 buses, and for the latter district, the company will operate routes with 23 buses.

New school bus inspector hired in Iowa

Joe Funk takes over duties for inspecting school buses in the western region of the state. He joins inspector Verlan Vos and replaces Owen Freese, who recently retired from the position. A school bus inspection fee increase that is awaiting final approval will allow the Iowa Department of Education to hire one more inspector.

Pupil transporter, alt-fuel advocate Mike McClung passes

McClung, who served in the transportation department at Northside Independent School District in San Antonio from 1977 to 2000, passed away on March 9 at the age of 65. McClung was a longtime supporter of using alternative fuels to power school buses, and he was instrumental in converting the district’s fleet from diesel to propane.

School bus crashes into house

Deputies in Piketon, Ohio, say Tuesday’s accident occurred as the bus was crossing a one-lane bridge. The bus driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the house after the driver of a Jeep tried to cross the bridge at the same time when the bus was only halfway across.

A California board again finds James Schoenfeld unsuitable for release from prison, but he will be re-examined in three years. In 1976, Schoenfeld and two others hijacked a school bus and imprisoned the 26 children and their driver in a buried moving van.
