MALDEN, Mass. — A transportation provider for a school that serves special-needs students sent an Uber to pick up a student instead of a school bus, WHDH reports.

Nicole Williams told the news source that her 13-year-old daughter was supposed to start school recently at The Boston Center, and that a school bus was supposed to pick her up. However, an Uber arrived, late, and Williams, who drives a school van for a living, said she did not allow the driver to take her daughter. Williams added that the background checks for school bus drivers and Uber drivers are different and that you have to be 18 years old to be an Uber customer.

The Boston Center said in a statement obtained by WHDH that it hires an independent company to provide transportation for patients who qualify, and that the company sent the Uber without the school's knowledge, due to a lack of available drivers at the time. The statement also said that The Boston Center will stop using the company’s services if this occurs again.
