SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Pupil Transportation Safety Institute’s (PTSI) Transporting Students with Disabilities training curriculum has been revised.

The comprehensive 18-hour curriculum, which is designed for bus drivers and attendants who transport students with special needs, has been rewritten and updated for 2009 to comply with current IDEA regulations and industry standards.

The program is divided into nine standalone units that cover the following topics:

    • Introduction to transporting school-age students and young children with disabilities
    • Characteristics of school-age students with disabilities
    • Legal aspects for transporting infants and toddlers, preschool children and school-age students with disabilities
    • The importance of communication
    • Behavior management strategies
    • Safe loading, unloading and transport
    • Special preparation for emergencies
    • Transporting students who are medically complex
    • Driver and attendant responsibilities
