HOUSTON — A special-needs student who recently jumped from a moving school bus was found safe nearly an hour later, KTRK reports.

On Aug. 26, officials told the news source that the 14-year-old boy jumped out of the bus on the Eastex Freeway at about 8:20 a.m. It is unclear how fast the bus was moving at the time. Houston Independent School District told KTRK that six students were riding on the bus and were wearing seat belts. An aide and nurse were also riding the bus. The boy, who was in the first seat, unbuckled his seat belt, quickly moved to the front of the bus, and pushed the door open. The bus driver and aide tried to follow the boy, and the nurse stayed with the students.

Nearly one hour later, a police officer saw the boy walking along another freeway, the I-45, according to the news source. The officer said he seemed scared, but didn’t appear to be hurt. He was taken to a hospital to be checked out. Police told KTRK that the student covered a lot of ground within the time he was missing.

The school bus driver was emotional as she was reunited with the boy, according to KTRK. She was interviewed by the police before driving the rest of the students aboard the bus to school.
