HANOVER PARK, Ill. — A special-needs school bus driver here moonlights as a world champion track athlete and won a handful of medals over the summer, the Daily Herald reports.

Emma McGowan, 47, who is a bus driver for special-needs students at Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54, won two gold and three silver medals at the premier masters track and field event, the World Masters Track and Field Championships, held in Lyon, France, according to the newspaper. She brought home the gold medal in the women's 100-meter for the 45-49 age group after running the event's final heat in 12.85 seconds.

McGowan has worked as a bus driver for more than eight years, and, according to the Daily Herald, the flexible schedule allows her time to practice on the track and in the gym in the morning or early afternoon.

The students McGowan drives only know her as their bus driver, and “don’t exactly understand what I’m doing. … They know I’m going to run,” she told the newspaper.
