Connecticut school bus operator Louis DeVivo passes
DeVivo was the owner and CEO of DATTCO, which is the ninth-largest school bus contractor in the nation and is a dealer for IC Bus and Collins.
KENSINGTON, Conn. — Louis DeVivo, owner and CEO of transportation company DATTCO, died on Aug. 23 at age 83.
DeVivo formed D&T Transportation, which is now DATTCO, with his brother Ed DeVivo and cousin Mike Tolomea. The company is based in New Britain, Connecticut.
DATTCO originated in 1924 under the name MASTCO. In 1949, the business was renamed D&T Transportation and began providing school transportation service. At that point, the company only had one official employee and operated just one vehicle: a 1939 Ford Superior body school bus.
The name of the business was changed to DATTCO in 1966, when Tolomea sold his portion of D&T Transportation.
In the decades since, DATTCO has grown to become the ninth-largest school bus contractor in the nation, according to School Bus Fleet’s 2015 Top 50 Contractors list. The company transports about 110,000 students daily on more than 1,300 buses.
DATTCO also provides other transportation services, including motorcoach charters and chauffeured vehicle transportation. The company is also a dealer for IC Bus and Collins Bus.
DeVivo was active in transportation industry groups. He was a past president of the Connecticut Bus Association and a lifetime member of the New England Bus Association. DATTCO is also a longtime member of the Connecticut School Transportation Association.
DeVivo was born in New Britain and grew up on a family farm, which fostered his love of gardens and old tractors. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army and attended Hillyer College, which is now part of the University of Hartford. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in New Britain and the Kiwanis Club of Berlin, Connecticut.
DeVivo is survived by his wife, Irene DeVivo, along with many other family members. DeVivo’s son Donald DeVivo currently serves as president of DATTCO.
