WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A state conference on special-needs transportation to be held here in January filled up within a day of its announcement, but more editions of the event are planned.
The California Department of Education’s Office of School Transportation (OST) sent out an announcement in late September that it will offer a two-day Transporting Children with Special Needs conference at its training facility in West Sacramento on Jan. 6 and 7.
The OST has held multiple editions of the conference in recent years. Officials said that they have been getting an increasing number of requests for the event.
The day after announcing the January conference, OST said that the 40-attendee maximum had been reached, and applications were no longer being accepted. However, two more editions of the event are scheduled for April and November 2015; applications for those will be accepted beginning Jan. 15.
Topics on the agenda for the January conference include navigating the special-education process, bullying vs. harassment, loading and unloading, proper securement and autism spectrum disorders.
