Dallas buys over 100 new buses, adds belts

Dallas County Schools has been acquiring a variety of new equipment for its giant fleet, from new school buses to lap-shoulder belts to stop-arm cameras. Texas district equips 400 buses with exterior cameras

Houston Independent School District outfits the buses with Safety Vision's SV-835 and SV-690 exterior cameras to increase student safety, and it plans to retrofit the rest of its buses next year. The district’s buses are also equipped with the company's RoadRecorder 6000 PRO mobile digital video recorder and four SV-830 dome interior cameras.

Rachel McCleery to leave NSTA

McCleery will end her tenure at the association on Aug. 30 to do press and correspondence work for a Michigan congressman. McCleery joined NSTA in July 2011 as communications and operations manager, and officials say she was a valuable asset to the association, having advanced its social media exposure and updated its operating systems.

Bullied bus monitor starts anti-bullying foundation

Karen Klein, who received an outpouring of support after a video of her being bullied by students on a bus went viral, launches the Karen Klein Anti-Bullying Foundation using $100,000 of the $703,873 that was raised on her behalf. The foundation is starting a music tour to raise money for anti-bullying counseling, among other initiatives.

Parents call for return of yellow bus service

Some parents in Minneapolis are voicing their concerns about a new move to have high school students use the transit system instead of riding yellow buses to school. Shelly Jonas of the Minnesota School Bus Operators Association tells SBF that the fact that these parents are demanding yellow buses is an encouraging sign for school bus contractors, for whom competition from transit agencies is a national issue.
