Detroit Public Schools to privatize transportation

First Student will transport the district’s nearly 90,000 students with a fleet of about 360 vehicles under a five-year contract that begins on May 1. By the start of the 2010-11 school year, all of the buses will feature GPS tracking and child-check reminder systems, as well as crossing gates.

Big jump in danger zone fatalities

Seventeen children were killed in school bus loading or unloading accidents in the 2008-09 school year, according to the Kansas State Department of Education’s national survey. It’s a large increase from the previous year’s total, five fatalities.
