School bus operators still eligible for fuel tax exemptions

After some IRS offices challenged operators’ claims of exemptions for smaller school buses earlier this year, the NSTA presented the issue to members of Congress, who asked Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to clarify the tax policy. Geithner stated that the law does not limit the fuel tax exemption based on size of the bus, and the IRS cases have been dismissed.

New York association announces contest winners

Designs for NYAPT's bumper sticker contest, which is in its third year, must include the words "STOP 4 THE BUS" and depict the requirement for motorists to stop for school buses that have their red lights flashing. This year's contest drew more than 200 entries from elementary students across the state.

The proportion of fatalities associated with driver distraction increased from 10 percent to 16 percent between 2005 and 2009, NHTSA reports. The under-20 age group had the greatest proportion of distracted drivers.

Kentucky districts take delivery of Thomas Built hybrids

Twenty Saf-T-Liner C2e hybrid school buses are being sent to 13 districts, with the last delivery scheduled for Oct. 15. The buses were purchased through a $12.9 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant to the state, which will allow for the replacement of up to 200 of its oldest buses throughout the next school year.

Parents push for stronger illegal bus passing law

During the upcoming Mississippi legislative session, Lori and Andy Key will re-introduce a bill that would raise fines for first-time offenders to $500 to $5,000 and incur a 30-day driver’s license suspension. “Nathan’s Law” — named after their son, who was killed in a bus passing incident — was introduced in January, but died in committee.

New Jersey bill would allow ads on school buses

Under the legislation, the boards of education for school districts statewide can enter into contracts to sell advertising space on the exterior sides of buses that districts own or lease. Ads for tobacco or alcohol products or for political advocacy would be prohibited. Fifty percent of any revenue generated by the sale would be used to offset fuel costs for providing pupil transportation services.

School bus driver fired after letting teens drive

The driver allowed two 15-year-old students to drive her school bus during the afternoon route last week. She admitted to the incident the next morning and could face charges of reckless conduct and letting an unlicensed person operate a vehicle.
