School bus kidnapper found suitable for parole

Richard Schoenfeld, one of three men who kidnapped 26 children and their school bus driver in Chowchilla, Calif., in 1976, could be released in 2021. His parole still must be reviewed by the governor, and any sitting governor between now and 2021 could ask the state's parole board to reconsider its decision.

The students’ school bus driver finds out about the incident and calls transportation officials, who then contact the sheriff’s office. A responding deputy finds several hypodermic needles on the bus, but the sheriff's office does not plan to investigate, as it was an accident and no crime took place.
