District’s bus drivers stage sick-out following layoff decision

About half of Trenton (N.J.) Public Schools’ drivers fail to report for work last Thursday after state fiscal monitor Marc Cowell overturns the district board’s vote to retain them and 150 other employees. Interim Superintendent of Schools Raymond Broach says they are working on “rectifying this situation.”

Student death leads to call for tougher bus passing legislation

Kim Koenigs, the mother of a student who befriended Kadyn Halverson, starts a "Kadyn's Law" Facebook page in honor of the girl, who was killed by a motorist who failed to stop as she was walking across a road to board her school bus. The page calls for legislation that would provide more stringent laws for drivers who illegally pass school buses.

Teen honored for efforts to make buses more fuel efficient

Jonny Cohen, inventor of GreenShields, is one of five winners of the Technology for a Better World Campaign. GreenShields is a polycarbonate shield that attaches to the front of school buses. It is designed to make them more aerodynamic and, in turn, result in fuel savings.

A man and a woman are taken into custody for the theft of 12 large bus batteries and connector switches from an elementary school in Iredell, N.C. They are also suspects in the theft of bus batteries from two other elementary schools in Statesville, N.C.

Marisa Weisinger, technical specialist for Innovative Transportation Solutions in Houston, is nominated by officials from Q'Straint/Sure-Lok and Hydrotex to run for the position. It will be available this fall at the conclusion of the NAPT Summit when Mike Roscoe of the C.E. White Co. steps down after fulfilling a two-year term.

New York association supports illegal bus passing bill

The legislation would allow for prosecution of such violations based on photographic evidence as well as allow for citations to be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, regardless of who was driving it at the time. NYAPT President David Christopher points out that motorists in the state illegally pass school buses "some 50,000 times each day."
