New Mexico receives funding to help maintain bus routes

McKinley and San Juan counties will share $561,000, which was released by the U.S. Department of Transportation and made available through the Indian School Bus Route program. The money will be used to improve roads within or that lead to reservations and serve as school bus routes.

Man sentenced for hitting teen with bus

A judge sentences school bus driver Timothy Whalen to six years with the Montana Department of Corrections with 18 months suspended for striking 15-year-old Eleanore Dykes at a crosswalk while driving under the influence of alcohol. Dykes suffered a broken leg in the 2009 incident.

Judge rules to continue school bus service for Staten Island students

State Supreme Court Justice John Fusco says that New York City’s decision to take away the service was made without concern for the welfare and safety of the seventh and eighth graders who are affected. The city’s Department of Education has vowed to appeal Fusco’s decision.

Districts receive grants to reduce diesel emissions

Iowa’s Bus Emissions Education Program awards $38,000 grants to seven districts. The grants will allow the districts to replace a 1993 model year or older bus with a new one that meets 2010 EPA certification.
