Maryland allots $550K for school bus safety efforts

Forty-six agencies statewide will receive a total of $548,411 in grants from the Maryland School Bus Safety Enforcement Fund to put toward police overtime to enforce bus safety laws or driver education activities. The money for such projects is designed to help reduce the incidence of illegal bus passing in the state.

Survey confirms 'alarming' number of illegal passes

The first national survey of stop-arm running finds that more than 76,000 vehicles illegally passed school buses in a one-day snapshot. NASDPTS President Mike Simmons says that the association, which conducted the survey, hopes that the results will "trigger more safety countermeasures within states and at the national level."

Kim Koenigs, the mother of a student who befriended Kadyn Halverson, starts a "Kadyn's Law" Facebook page in honor of the girl, who was killed by a motorist who failed to stop as she was walking across a road to board her school bus. The page calls for legislation that would provide more stringent laws for drivers who illegally pass school buses.

New York association supports illegal bus passing bill

The legislation would allow for prosecution of such violations based on photographic evidence as well as allow for citations to be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, regardless of who was driving it at the time. NYAPT President David Christopher points out that motorists in the state illegally pass school buses "some 50,000 times each day."

Bruce Thomas Gentry receives a 45-day suspended sentence for passing a stopped school bus in his police cruiser. The mother of a boy who was crossing the street to board the bus and witnessed the incident says she had to yell her son's name to prevent him from stepping out in front of Gentry's car.
