EPA offers $3M in school bus purchase rebates

EPA provided $2 million in 2012 for school bus purchase rebates, and the program received over 1,000 applications for the 28 awards made.

7 Mississippi districts receive $105K for new buses to cut emissions

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality gives each district a $15,000 grant toward the purchase of a new bus to replace an older bus. Since 2009, through grants and the Mississippi School Bus Retrofit Project, the organization has retrofitted 1,931 school buses and provided partial funding for 10 new buses to reduce emissions.

Anti-idling contest saves about $15,000 in fuel

Douglas County (Colo.) School District’s transportation department sponsored a competition between its west, east and north terminals to see which group could turn in the lowest amount of school bus engine idling time. The winning terminal cut its idling time by 50% — and won a catered lunch.

District displays rusted bus, gets funding greenlight

Medina (Ohio) City School District officials parked one of the district’s buses outside Medina High School before a city school board meeting took place so board members and the public could see the corrosion that has rendered many of the district’s buses irreparable. The board approved funding for 15 new school buses and approved soliciting bids for the purchase of two additional school buses equipped to transport students with special needs.

District uses school bus for program that feeds low-income students

The Manatee County (Fla.) School District’s school bus, which no longer runs in its fleet, is wrapped with brightly colored photos of the four food groups and delivers free lunches to more than 100 children each day. The food bus program runs through Aug. 8 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
