NTSB: Proper lap belt use could have lessened injuries in bus crash

In its investigation of last year's fatal Chesterfield, N.J., school bus crash, the National Transportation Safety Board finds that some students wore their lap belts improperly and some didn't wear them at all. The agency says it believes that lap belts can provide a benefit to most school bus passengers who wear them properly, although the addition of shoulder belts would reduce flailing injuries and provide greater protection.

Bus driver suspended after wreck story proven false

The school bus driver reportedly tells investigators that the accident she was in was caused by an oncoming car moving into her lane. But an onboard camera recording shows that she was distracted for a few seconds by a student, and it also shows two cars passing the bus in the proper lane approximately 15 to 20 seconds before the wreck.

Kentucky transportation secretary pushed for increased bus safety

Milo D. Bryant, who served as the state’s transportation secretary under Gov. Wallace Wilkinson in the 1980s, passed away last week at the age of 82. Bryant led a bus safety task force that recommended various improvements to school buses and driver training following the fatal 1988 school bus crash in Carrollton.

Jury points to pedal misapplication in Liberty bus crash

In the fatal Liberty, Mo., school bus crash in 2005, the National Transportation Safety Board ruled out mechanical failure and found that the circumstances “are consistent with driver pedal misapplication.” Now, in a civil trial, the jury echoes the federal investigators’ conclusion.
