Dubai school transport conference draws global crowd

Speakers and delegates make recommendations in such areas as school transportation safety and security, driver training and road layout around schools. School bus video surveillance footage obtained by ABC15 shows an unsettling ordeal for a 4-year-old boy with special needs who was left behind. In the video, the boy appears to wake up, gets up from his seat and looks around. The youngster, holding his backpack, looks scared and unsure of what to do.

In partnership with the School Bus Safety Co., the Child Safety Network initiative aims to reduce school bus accidents — with an added benefit of generating revenue for districts. The free Safe Bus program, which receives funds from corporate sponsorships, includes a comprehensive training curriculum, school bus safety PSAs, and a GPS and parental notification system.

DVD teaches bullying response techniques

The video, called “What Are You Going To Do?,” was created by the Oregon Pupil Transportation Association and Dr. Allan Beane, founder of Bully Free Systems. It depicts various types of bullying, with one situation leading to a student taking a bus hostage. Those involved in developing the video tell SBF the goals were to show a worst-case scenario and provide tools that drivers can use to address bullying.

47-year school bus driver honored in New York

Pat Beesmer, a driver for Ethan Allen Transportation, is named School Bus Driver of the Year in Ulster County. A mother of three kids who have been passengers on Beesmer's bus says that she is "very tuned in to every child's needs — those who occasionally get bus sick, and those who miss Mom or Dad on their first day of school."

Study points to risks of 'permitted' left turns

Researchers in Oregon say that in permitted left turns — distinguished from protected left turns — drivers may have to pick their way through narrow windows of oncoming traffic. Their study finds that about 4% to 9% of the time, drivers making permitted left turns don't look to see if there are pedestrians in the way.
