Ore. district sees cost savings from propane buses

Portland Public Schools operates some of its own buses and also contracts with First Student — eighty percent of all the buses are powered by the fuel. Officials say the propane units run up to 30,000 miles longer than buses fueled by gasoline, resulting in lower maintenance costs, and the district expects to see a 50-percent savings in fuel costs.

Mont. district opts for belts on buses

The Helena School District reportedly will be the first in the state to require lap-shoulder belts on its buses. The move comes with the school board’s approval of a seven-year busing contract that specifies the three-point restraints.

Ga. team takes top honors at special-needs roadeo

Bus driver Kenny Moss and attendant Laura Lietch of Fulton County Schools in Fairburn, Ga., place first in the 15th National Special Needs Team Safety Roadeo, scoring 885 points out of a possible 1,002 points. Teams from Syracuse, N.Y., and Canton, Ga., take second and third place, respectively.

Since the initiative began in 2010, officials say First Student has welcomed veterans returning from overseas into the ranks at locations in Columbia, Parkville, Kansas City and St. Joseph.

Bus driver praised for actions during shooting

Police say the driver told the students on his bus to get down out of the line of fire, he was able to leave the scene of the incident and he then called dispatchers to notify police. Although one bullet reportedly hit the bus, no one was injured.
