Driver in runaway bus case pleads guilty

A former school bus driver in Maryland whose unattended bus rolled into a small child in April pleads guilty to reckless endangerment and other charges. Prosecutors are asking that 61-year-old Arturo Harris be sentenced to 15 years, suspend all but 30 days, and three years of supervised probation.

Maryland county launches stop-arm cameras on 20 buses

Prince George’s County Public Schools partnered with the county police department on the new stop-arm camera program, dubbed “Safe Cross.” The district’s head of security says that the bus drivers are “very excited about this program, because they obviously care very deeply for our students, and they don’t want them to be in harm’s way.”

Ferguson school district extends busing in ‘hot zone’

In light of the civil unrest that has captivated the nation in recent weeks, the Ferguson-Florissant School District expands its school bus service to make sure students get to school safely. Bus routes for an elementary school in the “hot zone” of unrest will temporarily pick up children inside the normal 1-mile radius walk zone.

South Carolina stop-arm camera bill signed

Gov. Nikki Haley approves legislation that allows South Carolina school buses to be equipped with digital video recording devices to document vehicles passing illegally. Stop-arm safety advocate David Poag says that "the use of video surveillance in enforcement efforts will ultimately make motorists think twice before passing a stopped school bus."

Deputies to ride buses for increased passenger safety
